Football Opens CHSL Competition vs. Preseason Favorite Detroit Catholic Central on Friday at Home

The Central Catholic football team will open Catholic High School League (CHSL) play against Detroit Catholic Central on Friday, September 5.  The opening kick against the Shamrocks is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Gallagher Stadium.

In conjunction with Friday’s CHSL matchup, CCHS will honor alumnus Mark Wagner (Class of 1975) at halftime as part of Military Appreciation Night.

The Fighting Irish (0-2) have been picked to finish 2nd in the Central Division in a vote by the CHSL’s head coaches, trailing only DCC (1-0) in the 6-team division preseason poll.

Central Catholic is coming off a heartbreaking 28-27 setback against nationally ranked Detroit Cass Tech on Friday in the Amazon Prep Kickoff Classic at Tom Adams Field.

The Technicians (1-0), who were ranked No. 22 in last week’s MaxPreps Poll, outscored the Scarlet & Gray 14-0 in the 2nd half to secure the 1-point victory.

CCHS had a chance to win the neutral-site game in the waning seconds of regulation, but senior Preston Fryzel’s 45-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right.

Central Catholic will play a Detroit Catholic Central team that began its season with a 41-7 triumph vs. Chippewa Valley this past weekend at home.

Last fall, Central Catholic suffered a 21-7 setback vs. DCC in its CHSL opener at Fr. Richard Elmer Stadium, stopping its school-record 33-game winning streak.

The Fighting Irish’s lone score came on a 70-yard TD pass from junior QB Ali Beydoun to senior WR/DB Sharard Vaughn III to open the 3rd quarter.  Unfortunately for Central Catholic, the Shamrocks immediately answered with their own scoring drive to make it a 2-score difference and halt any momentum CCHS had established

Central Catholic will return to the gridiron against Brother Rice on Friday, September 12 at 7 p.m. at Blue Devils Stadium on the campus of Lawrence Tech University.

A season ago, Central Catholic secured a 37-0 victory against Brother Rice in Gallagher Stadium as part of Homecoming Weekend.

CCHS did most of its damage on the ground against the Warriors, finishing with 201 rushing yards.  Senior RB Anthony Sylvester led CCHS with 81 yards and 2 TDs, while RB Tyler Morgan added 49 yards and 2 TDs, and senior Jerome Davis V had 43 yards and 1 score.

As good as Central Catholic was running the ball, its defense was even better.  The Scarlet & Gray held Brother Rice to 64 yards of total offense.
