Football Travels to Airport Highway to Tangle with Rival St. John’s Jesuit on Friday

The Central Catholic football team will play red-hot St. John’s Jesuit (4-2, 1-1 CHSL) on Friday, October 3 in a key Catholic High School League matchup at Lyden Field.  The opening kick against the arch-rival Titans is scheduled for 7 p.m.  Both teams enter Friday’s crosstown matchup sporting a 3-game winning streak.

CCHS (3-3, 2-1 CHSL) is currently tied for 2nd place in the Central Division in the CHSL with St. Mary’s Preparatory School (3-1, 2-1 CHSL), 1 game behind frontrunner Detroit Catholic Central (5-0, 2-0 CHSL).

Central Catholic is coming off an impressive 35-13 victory against River Rouge in Panther Stadium.  The Fighting Irish posted a commanding 568-128 advantage in total yards and a 28-6 edge in 1st downs vs. the Panthers to help them win their 3rd-straight game.

The 2-headed monster of senior RB Anthony Sylvester and junior RB Jeremiah Fuller fueled the way offensively with 117 and 116 yards on the ground, both season-best efforts.  Sylvester found the end zone for the 4th time in the last 5 contests with a 3-yard TD run, while Fuller registered a 1-yard TD plunge.

In addition, junior QB Ali Beydoun completed 3-of-11 passes for 108 yards, including a 95-yard TD strike to senior Victor Singleton, Jr.  Beydoun was also credited with a 12-yard TD scamper.

Overall this fall, Beydoun has connected on 60-of-102 passes (58.8 percent) for 763 yards and 5 TDs.  Fuller has carried the ball 84 times for 417 yards with 4 scores, followed closely by Sylvester with 371 yards on 63 attempts and a team-high 6 TDs.  Beydoun’s favorite target has been senior WR Preston Fryzel with 13 receptions for 252 yards.

SJJ enters Friday’s action on the heels of a 24-17 victory vs. Brother Rice at home.

Last fall, Central Catholic defeated St. John’s Jesuit, 56-21, at home.  The Fighting Irish tallied points on their 1st 6 possessions en route to registering their 10th-straight victory in the series.

Fuller paced CCHS with 3 TDs in the 1st half, followed closely by 2 scores from RB Tyler Morgan.  They also benefitted from fumble returns for scores from DL Curtis Strode, Jr. and LB Michael Besteda to force a running clock in the 2nd half.

Not to be overlooked by a strong running game and a stout defense, Central Catholic QB Isaiah Fox completed an efficient 12-of-13 passes for 235 yards and 2 TDs. 

Following this week’s game, CCHS will return to action against OLSM on Friday, October 10.  The opening kick vs. the Eaglets is slated for 7 p.m. at Milewski Field. 

Last fall, Central Catholic secured a narrow 7-6 victory against OLSM at home. Fox connected with senior WR Sharard Vaughn III on a 4-yard TD reception with 59 seconds left in regulation to give the Scarlet & Gray its 1st points of the game.

Following a 15-yard penalty, senior PK Blake Moody successfully booted the extra point for the game-winning tally.

The last-minute score was setup after an interception by LB/TE Dominic Spinazze II, as OLSM was trying to run out the clock. 

The Eaglets had 1 final possession to win the conference matchup, but CCHS responded with consecutive sacks from Besteda and junior LB Antonio Elizondo, as well as a game-sealing interception from DB Dantoni Callaway to close out the home triumph.
