Get to Know CCHS Staffulty Member - Heather Vascik ‘02

- What subjects and grade levels do you teach?
I teach freshman English.

- What is your educational background?
After graduating from CCHS, I attended the University of Toledo and earned a BA in theatre with a minor in communications in 2007.  I also have a Master of Arts in education/adult education & training from the University of Phoenix (2011), and a Master of Science in human resource management from the University of Phoenix (2012).

- What did you do before joining the CCHS staffulty?
I was a music and drama teacher at Maritime Academy for the past three years, and before that I taught in a K-6 environment as a music, drama, and technology teacher for eight years at Discovery Academy.

- What inspired you to become a teacher?
I love learning, and my original reason was because I wanted to help others learn.  My education has provided many opportunities for me, and I want to help our students on their education journey and to help inspire them to find their spark.

- What made you want to teach at Central Catholic specifically?
I LOVED my experience as a student at Central Catholic and the sense of family, love, school spirit, togetherness, and faith.  When I was a student here, I was on the varsity track & field team and in the Marching, Concert, Pep, Jazz, and Performing Bands (in a leadership role) all four years.  I was also a part of the National Honor Society, Spiritual Commission, and Gospel Choir.  I made a lot of friends, was in a commercial for Central Catholic, learned to read music and play saxophone, went to NYC with the Marching Band for the first time, and I even got baptized my senior year at school.

I credit CCHS for helping me become the person that I am today.  I've learned so much here, and I’m extremely excited to be a part of the staffulty now.

- What do you hope your impact will be on your students?
I hope that I can influence our students to achieve their educational goals in English, helping them become readers as well as strong writers and communicators, and that it can ignite a passion for learning.

- What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I love music, going to concerts, playing board games, catering, crafting, reading, and acting/community theatre.  I participate in at least one or two musicals per year.  I also love spending time with my husband, son Michael (age 15), and my family and friends.
