Women’s History Month Q&A – Kaitlyn Young

Kaitlyn Young is in her 4th year teaching mathematics at Central Catholic High School. Kaitlyn is also an assistant softball coach for the Fighting Irish.

Kaitlyn earned a bachelor’s degree in math education from The University of Toledo. A 4-year letterwinner for the Rockets’ softball team, she played a pivotal role in the Midnight Blue & Gold securing the 2019 Mid-American Conference Championship.

Kaitlyn is married to husband, David, and they have a rescue dog, Alika. When Kaitlyn is not teaching or coaching, she spends her time planning her next Disney vacation. 

What advice would you give to women in your respective field?
I would tell them to not feel pressured to fit into an outdated image. More often then not, when you think about becoming a teacher, you think about what you will wear, how you will decorate your classroom, and some of your favorite lessons/activities. There is so much more that goes into being an excellent teacher and it is important to realize that it's okay for your classroom to not be what you originally imagined. As long as you are showing up for your students and doing your best to help mold their future each and every day, that's what is truly important. 

Tell us about a woman you looked up to & why?
I have looked up to my mother my entire life. She was the best at handling any situation that life threw at her. She wasn't afraid to say what was on her mind and she genuinely cared for every single person she met. I strive to be half the person she was each-and-every day. 

What does Women's History Month mean to you?
Women's History Month is a time to reflect on all of the great thing’s women have accomplished throughout history. It isn't always easy, but so many inspirational women have shown us time and time again that women are capable of ANYTHING. I think it is so important to share this message with every student we get the chance to teach. 

What makes Central Catholic High School a SPECIAL place?
The people!!! When they say you are joining the Irish Family, they aren't kidding. We truly care for each other and push each other to be our best each-and-every day. This goes for all the teachers, staff, coaches, and students. It truly is a special place to be a part of!!!
