Boys’ Basketball Rolls Past Clay at Home, 67-41

The Central Catholic boys’ basketball team turned in a dominant performance Tuesday night, defeating Clay 67–41 in the Sullivan Center.  With the wire-to-wire non-league victory, the Fighting Irish improved to 14–2 on the season.

Central Catholic’s defense set the tone, holding the Eagles to 31.3 percent shooting (15-of-48) and forcing 20 turnovers, fueling the Scarlet & Gray to its ninth consecutive win.

Junior guard Cayden Kynard led the way with 25 points and five rebounds, while senior guard Manny Johnson added 16 points.  Senior guard Draden Wardrop chipped in eight points in the balanced effort.

Clay was led by Grant Oberdick, who finished with 25 points.

Earlier in the evening, the CCHS junior varsity team earned a 46–34 home victory, while the freshman squad dropped a close 21–20 decision.

Central Catholic (6–1 CHSL) returns to action Saturday, February 7, when the Fighting Irish face St. Mary’s Preparatory in the CHSL Bishop Tournament quarterfinals.  The No. 2 seed Irish will take on the No. 7 seed Eaglets at 2 p.m. at Marian High School.  Saturday’s game will air LIVE on 100.7 FM The Ticket, beginning at 1:45 p.m.

During the regular season, Central Catholic defeated St. Mary’s Preparatory 45–42 on January 9 at the Dombrowski Fieldhouse.

If the Fighting Irish advance, they will face the winner of No. 6 seed University of Detroit Jesuit and No. 3 seed St. John’s Jesuit in the semifinals on Wednesday, February 11 at 7 p.m.
