Football Routs De La Salle Collegiate on Homecoming, 35-6
The Central Catholic football team routed De La Salle Collegiate, 35-6, on Friday as part of Homecoming Weekend in Gallagher Stadium. With the emphatic home victory, the Fighting Irish improve to 2-3 overall, 2-1 in the Catholic High School League.
CCHS outgained DLSC, 322-175 and finished with a commanding 17-8 advantage in 1st downs.
Central Catholic scored 4 of its 5 TDs on the ground, paced by senior RB Anthony Sylvester with a pair of TDs. Sylvester has now found the end zone in 3 of the 5 games this season.
Junior QB Ali Beydoun completed 6-of-10 passes for 156 yards, including an 80-yard TD pass to junior RB Jeremiah Fuller on Central Catholic’s opening play from scrimmage. Beydoun was also CCHS’s leading rusher with 65 yards on 8 carries and 1 TD.
After Fuller’s opening-play TD, the score remained the same until CCHS registered 3 rushing TDs to take a 28-0 lead into the intermission.
Sylvester accounted for the 1st 2 TDs, scoring on runs of 1 and 12 yards, respectively. Beydoun tallied the other touchdown, crossing the goal line from 19 yards out to make it a 4-possession difference at the break.
Sylvester’s 1st TD and Beydoun’s score were setup by interceptions from junior DB Beckham Vargas and senior DB Victor Singleton, Jr.
Central Catholic continued to pour it on in the 2nd half, posting points on a 1-yard TD plunge by junior RB Antonio Elizondo to force a running clock.
The Pilots finally broke through in the waning moments of the game to spoil the shutout, but it was too little too late.
CCHS will return to action against River Rouge on Friday, September 26. The opening kick against the Panthers is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Panthers Stadium. The 2 teams will meet on the gridiron for the 1st time.
