Johnson & Floyd Named The Blade Player & Coach of the Year

A historic season for the Central Catholic boys’ basketball program has earned two of its leaders the highest honors in Northwest Ohio.

Senior Manny Johnson has been named The Blade Boys Basketball Player of the Year, while Head Coach Mike Floyd has been selected The Blade Coach of the Year — marking the first time in program history Central Catholic has swept both awards.

Johnson becomes the first Fighting Irish player to earn The Blade’s Player of the Year distinction since Lamar Chears in 1999.  A Division III First Team All-Ohio selection, Johnson led the Scarlet & Gray with 14.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 2.7 steals per game — a complete, selfless leader who impacted every phase of the game.

Floyd, who recently accepted the head coaching position at his alma mater, Defiance College, leaves behind a legacy that will long be remembered on Cherry Street.  Over eight seasons, he compiled a 125–71 record, captured five district championships, and led the Fighting Irish to three 20-win seasons.

The 2025–26 campaign was one for the record books, as the Fighting Irish set a new program standard with 23 wins, captured a Division III Regional Championship, and advanced to the State Final Four for the first time since 2011.

Together, Johnson and Floyd helped elevate Central Catholic basketball to new heights — representing Irish Nation with excellence, humility, and pride.
