Minnie-Jean McMillian Selected Student of the Month for October

Junior Minnie-Jean McMillian is a member of Student Council, Student Senate, the Glee Club, IrishTHON Core Team, Afro-American Club, and the W.I.S.E Club.  She is also an Irish Ambassador.  Outside of Central Catholic, Minnie-Jean is involved in YIPPEE, which is a youth leadership group for juniors and seniors.  She is active in her church by participating in youth group meetings and events.

“I chose Central Catholic for a better education, and it has impacted my life tremendously by opening doors that I thought I would never achieve,” she said.  “I would like to thank all the staff at Central Catholic for encouraging and supporting me.  And I would also like to thank my mom for always being there for me and encouraging and believing in me no matter what.”

“Minnie-Jean is a very kind human being who works well with others,” said her chemistry teacher, Kim Bremer.  “She is curious, asks questions, and works hard in class.

Minnie-Jean is one of three Central Catholic students who were recently chosen by the Northwest Ohio African American Legacy Project as part of the inaugural cohort of NexGen, a bold new youth engagement initiative designed to identify, celebrate, and prepare the next generation of African American leaders in Toledo.  Students were nominated and selected based on their leadership, academic excellence, and community impact.

“It is really an honor and a privilege to be nominated for such a great task ahead of me,” Minnie-Jean said.  “The program chose us to be the next generation of leadership for our community, city, and for our schools.”

Senior Brooklynn Harrison and junior Kurtiss Whitman were the other CCHS students chosen for this honor.  NexGen challenges youth to rise and become changemakers in their communities.  The program works to pass down wisdom and create strong, competent leaders by fostering mentorship and providing new opportunities for young people.

After high school, Minnie-Jean plans to attend college and major in business management.  She would like to own a hotel restaurant franchise in the future.
