TOLEDO, OH - Central Catholic High School's Drama Club will bring a powerful story of courage, determination, and the pursuit of justice to the stage when it presents D.W. Gregory's award-winning historical drama, Radium Girls, as its Fall Play on Saturday, November 21, and Sunday, November 22, at the Historic Ohio Theatre, located at 3112 LaGrange St. in Toledo.
Written by D.W. Gregory, Radium Girls is an award-winning historical drama based on the true story of young female factory workers who battled the U.S. Radium Corporation in the early 20th century after suffering devastating health consequences from exposure to radioactive materials.
Set in the 1920s, the production follows a group of working-class women employed as dial painters, whose jobs involved applying radium-based paint to watch faces. As their health deteriorates, the women begin a courageous fight for accountability and justice against the company responsible for their exposure.
Through compelling storytelling and powerful performances, Radium Girls explores themes of perseverance, corporate responsibility, friendship, and the strength of individuals standing up for what is right.
For Central Catholic's Drama Club, the production also provides an opportunity for students to showcase their talents while bringing an important chapter of American history to life.
"When I considered which play would be a good fit for us this year, I couldn't help but think of all the dedicated students I have worked with since their freshmen year who have shown such growth as actors and who have consistently shown commitment to our theatre program," said Angela Mills, Central Catholic English teacher and Drama Club moderator. "This play offers roles with depth for our most seasoned students, as well as roles that will quickly foster growth in our new members. I believe this show honors the group we have this year, and I can't wait to see how our students will honor the real, historical people they portray."
The production features a talented ensemble of Central Catholic students portraying multiple characters throughout the historical drama.
