Wrestling Shines at Division II Sectional Championships

The Central Catholic wrestling team delivered a strong performance on Saturday, placing third at the Division II OHSAA Sectional Championships at Clyde High School.

The Fighting Irish advanced seven wrestlers to this weekend’s district tournament with Top 4 finishes.  Leading the way were junior Andrei Irimia (175 lbs.) and sophomore Kynton Carruthers (285 lbs.), who each captured sectional titles.

Junior Brendan Zapadka (113 lbs.) and junior Alex Guerra (138 lbs.) earned runner-up finishes, while senior Luke Andrews (157 lbs.), junior Joel Osbourne (150 lbs.), and sophomore Devin Joyner (190 lbs.) each placed third.

In addition, senior Roberto Alvarado, Jr. (157 lbs.) and senior Callen Osbourne (126 lbs.) finished fifth and will serve as alternates at districts.

On the girls’ side, sophomore Sophia Swanson (115 lbs.) placed third at the sectional, posting a 4-1 record to advance to districts.  Swanson becomes Central Catholic’s first-ever girls’ wrestling district qualifier — a historic milestone for the program.

The Fighting Irish will return to the mat at the D-II District Tournament on Friday-Saturday, March 6-7 at Norwalk High School.
