Kalyse Mays Selected Student of the Month for April

Sophomore Kalyse Mays is a member of the National Honor Society, and she plays basketball and lacrosse.  Outside of school, she is a CYO athletics concessions worker for sports like soccer, baseball, and softball.  She is a member of St. John XXIII Parish.  She went on a mission trip with other high school students from the parish last year to St. Louis, where they built a pavilion for a group of sisters, did food drives for the homeless, and helped at St. Vincent De Paul's thrift store.  This year she plans to join the parish on their mission trip to North Carolina.

Kalyse lives with her mom and her sister and describes herself as a very family-oriented person.  She loves to spend time with her family, especially her two baby cousins.

“I chose to come to Central Catholic because the community really inspired me,” Kalyse said.  “There isn't a divide here - everyone is one.  I think it is very impactful and sometimes even life-changing for students to come here and see how GOOD school can be when you are surrounded by essentially a family every day.  My education here has shown me that anything is achievable if you put your mind to it.”

Kalyse’s favorite teacher is Tye Turner, who teaches Anatomy & Physiology.  “He is very funny, and he makes sure to pick me and anybody else up if we’re not having a very good morning.”

“Kalyse is a positive person who tries hard to lift others up,” said Mr. Turner.  “She often speaks about the sports she is in with passion and love for teammates.  Kalyse can be goofy at times, but she does her best and accomplishes what she puts her mind to.”

“Kalyse creates a very positive environment and is a very determined student-athlete!” said Mallory Lenhart, AP US History teacher.  “She is outgoing and always makes her peers laugh.”

After high school, Kalyse plans to become a lawyer, and she is interested in attending a college such as the University of Chicago, Duke, or NYU.
