Luke Smith Chosen Student of the Month for May
Junior Luke Smith is a member of the National Honor Society and an altar server at school Masses. He plays football and baseball for the Fighting Irish. He is also an altar server at St. Ignatius Parish in Oregon. In the future, he would like to major in education in college.
Luke has participated in the Toledo YES Project, which is an annual summer service project for high school students and young adults from the Toledo area. Each year, 120 to 150 youth and over 100 adult volunteers come together for four days and do service in and around Toledo. Their work consists of helping private homeowners who are physically and/or financially unable to maintain or improve their homes. They also help at various non-profit groups, including women's shelters, family shelters, community centers, churches, and homeless outreach facilities, performing tasks that may be needed to improve the living situation of those they are helping. The program is designed to serve the people of Northwest Ohio, and to teach high school students the value of volunteering.
“I chose to attend Central Catholic after my Irish for a Day visit,” Luke recalled. “I really felt like each person was included, and every one of them was on the same team. So that aspect of support from so many people really stuck with me. And I continue to see that each day throughout the halls, in the classroom, in the student section at football and basketball games, and on the field. I'd like to thank Coach Dempsey and Coach Mielcarek for constantly bringing positive energy, work ethic, and instilling confidence in me that I use in all aspects of my life.”
“Luke is exactly the student every teacher wants,” said Katie Shanahan, English teacher. “He is a hard worker and truly seeks understanding of the material. I can always count on him for an answer or a reason to laugh. In addition to his academic efforts, and perhaps more importantly, Luke is a kind soul. He cares about his classmates, his teammates, and his teachers. Luke is a gem.”
